Behavior analysts work in autism clinics, early-intervention programs, public and private schools, residential and day programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, hospitals, and, less often, organizational behavior management. Job titles include BCBA, BCaBA, clinical supervisor, and behavior specialist. Those titles do not have their own Bureau of Labor Statistics Standard Occupational Classification. BLS has no BCBA SOC.

Analysts are often coded across counselors, therapists-all-other, and special education. As of May 2025, substance abuse, behavioral disorder, and mental health counselors (SOC 21-1018) had a median annual wage of $59,350, employment of 491,930, and projected growth of 16.8 percent from 2024 to 2034 with 48,300 openings a year (Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 OEWS; Employment Projections 2024-34). Therapists, all other (SOC 29-1129) had a median of $77,930, employment of 22,640, 11.5 percent projected growth, and 4,100 openings a year. Special education teachers, all other (SOC 25-2059) had a median of $76,580, employment of 33,930, 1.1 percent projected growth, and 2,900 openings a year. Counselors, all other (SOC 21-1019) had a median of $50,860, employment of 28,580, 12.6 percent projected growth, and 7,400 openings a year. Individual pay for certified behavior analysts varies by setting, geography, supervision load, and whether the state licenses the role. These proxy occupations also include many people who are not BCBAs.
It is a graduate degree in applied behavior analysis – often an MS, MA, or MEd – that delivers ABA coursework online or in a hybrid format. For BCBA eligibility, the program must be one BACB currently accepts (an acceptable ABA program or a verified course sequence). Supervised fieldwork is completed with clients under a qualified supervisor, not as a fully remote classroom exercise. Yes. Independent BCBA practice is a master’s-or-higher plus BACB pathway. A bachelor’s does not make you a BCBA. The bachelor’s-level BACB credential is the BCaBA, which practices under BCBA supervision.
The BCBA is the graduate-level BACB certification for independent behavior-analytic practice (plus a state license where required). The BCaBA is bachelor’s-level and works under a BCBA. The RBT is a paraprofessional credential – training, competency assessment, and an exam – not a college degree. RBTs implement plans under BCBA or BCaBA supervision.
No. The Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) accredits some university programs. BACB certifies individuals and has historically recognized verified course sequences. A school can hold institutional accreditation without ABAI program accreditation. Do not assume a program is ABAI-accredited from its website language; ask how the school documents BACB-acceptable coursework, and verify against current BACB rules.
Many do. Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) or an equivalent title is now common, with requirements that overlap BACB certification but are not identical. Confirm with the board in the state where you will practice – not the state where the school is located. This site does not publish a 50-state table because those rules change.
ABA curricula are built around the science of behavior and the ethics of applying it, not around counseling theory or psychological testing.
The first layer is concepts and measurement: the philosophical underpinnings of behavior analysis, reinforcement and stimulus control, measurement and data display, and experimental design. You learn to define behavior so it can be counted, to read a graph as a clinical document, and to distinguish a function-based intervention from a package that merely looks behavioral.
The second layer is assessment and intervention: functional behavior assessment, preference assessment, skill acquisition, reduction of interfering behavior, verbal behavior, and how to select procedures that match the function of the behavior rather than its topography. Ethics and professional conduct run through both layers, because this work is done with vulnerable clients and, often, with a staff of RBTs you will later supervise.
The third layer is supervised fieldwork. That is the part an online format cannot absorb. You accumulate supervised experience with real clients under a BACB-qualified supervisor, logging activities the current handbook counts. Coursework can be asynchronous. Fieldwork is scheduled around clients, sites, and a supervisor who meets BACB rules. Ask a program how that supervision is arranged before you compare tuition.
Credit totals and calendars vary by school. Many online ABA master’s programs run about two years; part-time tracks run longer. Treat any advertised length as a coursework calendar until you see how fieldwork is sequenced against it.
The sequence is conceptual because BACB changes eligibility. Read the current handbook at bacb.com rather than memorizing a blog post.
Earn a qualifying graduate degree. A master’s or higher from an ABA program BACB currently accepts, or a graduate degree plus a verified course sequence, depending on the pathway in force when you apply. Confirm which pathway your graduating cohort will use.
Complete supervised fieldwork. Hours, concentrated versus standard experience, and supervisor qualifications are set by BACB and change. Do not enroll on a guessed hour total. Ask the program how students in your region find qualified supervisors, and confirm the activities will count.
Pass the BCBA examination. BACB administers the exam. Programs may offer review; they do not control the cut score.
Obtain a state license if your state requires one. Certification and licensure are different credentials. An LBA (or equivalent) is issued by a state board. Some states key off BACB certification; some add coursework, jurisprudence exams, or background checks.
Maintain certification. BCBA status is not permanent. Recertification and continuing education are BACB requirements; state licenses renew on their own cycle.
A BCBA does not authorize you to practice as a clinical psychologist, to hold an LPC, or to provide psychotherapy under a counseling statute. Those are separate licenses with separate degrees – see psychology and mental health counseling. School-based work may also require an educator credential; see special education.
ABA or a related field? Choose ABA if you want behavior-analytic assessment, intervention, and supervision under BACB rules. Consider psychology if assessment and doctoral clinical practice are the draw, counseling or mental health counseling if you want an LPC-style therapy license, special education if the school caseload and teacher license are the goal, or behavioral health science if you want an undergraduate foundation before committing to a certification track.
